The better the original, the better the end product can be. We do not alter the original subject material. Surface dust will be lightly removed as standard practice but no water or chemical treatment will be applied. It is a dry process unless special cleaning is requested and risks understood.
The photograph is placed in a flat scanning system. We try to not roll or flex the emulsion surface. An electronic "TIFF", "RAW" or "DNG" image is captured into a computer file at 300 to 600 dpi depending on original size. Slides are scanned at extremely higher resolution. The resulting file is quite large as there is no compression or corrections to this raw scan format. Other resolution is available.
Before any further processing the image(s) are saved on an archival grade optical media (CD or DVD). Working copies are kept on a hard drive.
Some processing occurs while scanning. This is usually consists of obtaining a broad spectrum "capture" scan. All additional image processing and correction is handled in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS3. The extent of this processing largely determines the final image cost. All deliverables such as video slides, printed images and photo book albums add cost after this processing stage.
From this point on, there are many things that can be done with the image file. Since it is quite large at this point it can be downsized for any application or presentation. Only the future will determine how you will display your digital images.
